Archdeaconry of Erie

Regional dean for Wellington is Rev. Marian Haggerty, rector of Holy Trinity Church, London, regional dean for Delaware is Rev. Canon Sam Thomas, rector of St. Michael and All Angels, London.

The Wellington deanery consists of 8 churches in London, Ontario. The Delaware deanery covers an area south of London that includes St Thomas (pop. 36,110).

Shown is the Church of Epiphany, London in the Delaware deanery. The parish was founded in 1914 by Dean Davis.

St John’s Anglican, St Thomas, Ontario

St John's Anglican, St Thomas, OntarioSt Thomas is located 29km south of London, Ontario. In 1803 Thomas Talbot began to place settlers on a large tract of land he owned north of Lake Erie St Thomas, established c1810 was the capital of the settlement and named after the founder of the colony.

When St John’s was established St Thomas was an agricultural centre and shortly to become an important railway town. It now has a large Ford plant which makes the Crown Victoria, the best-selling police car in North America.

St John’s Anglican, St Thomas, Ontario is a core area Church, located just off St Thomas’ main thoroughfare, on Flora Street across from the Arthur Voaden Secondary School. For more than 130 years the parish has been a vibrant community, with many dedicated clergy and a loyal membership.

Rev. Jim Innes, who was providing ministry to the parish on a part-time basis, was appointed full-time rector to St. John’s, St. Thomas effective November 1st 2007.

Christ Church, Port Stanley, Ontario

Christ Church, Port Stanley, OntarioPort Stanley is located on the north shore of Lake Erie, some 10 minutes south of St. Thomas. Christ Church began as a mission of Old St Thomas Church in 1824.

Col. John Bostwick set aside land for the purpose of building Christ Church, Port Stanley, Ontario in 1826 but the church was not actually built until 1845.   Col. Bostwick, his wife and 27 of the Colonel’s descendants are buried in the churchyard.

The church offers Sunday services all year round at 8:30 am and 10:30 am with Eucharist at both services.

Christ Church was part of a combined parish with congregations at Tyrconnell, Dutton, West Lorne and Burwell Park. Since 1979, Christ Church, Port Stanley has been a single parish. Rector is Rev. Patt Nunn.

Parish of Tyrconnell, Ontario

Tyrconnell, OntarioThe 4 point parish consists of St. Peter’s Church, West Lorne; Grace Church, West Lorne; Church of the Nativity, Dutton and St. Stephen’s Church, Burwell Park.

St Peter’s is one of the Talbot Settlement Churches.

St Peter’s nave was erected in 1827 by the congregation, with the belfry and tower added in 1845 to accommodate a bell donated by the Earl of Galloway. In the cemetary are buried some of the area’s earliest settlers, including that of Col. Thomas Talbot, founder of the "Talbot Settlement."

St John’s, Glencoe, Ontario

St John's, Glencoe, OntarioThe first St John’s Church was built in 1869, before that services had been held in a school house.

The current building was built in 1893. Originally there was a bell tower over the main entrance but in the early 1950’s the tower was condemned and had to be taken down.

At various times through its history St John’s has been aligned with other congregations and today is in a 3 point parish with Christ Church Newbury and St Jude’s, Mt Brydges.

Trinity Church, Port Burwell, Ontario

Colonel Mahlon Burwell, after whom the village is named, paid for the church with the first service conducted in February 1836. The church bell came from Troy, New York by boat and is dated 1856. In 1978, The spire was damaged during a storm in 1978 and its replacement is shorter than the original.

The earliest recorded burial in the adjacent cemetery was 1818 with many pioneers and their children dying during an epidemic in 1878.

The parish hall was originally a school built in 1908 across the street. When a new school was built in 1925 the hall was moved to its current location.

St James Westminster Church, London, Ontario

St James Westminster Anglican Church, London, OntarioSt James Westminster, 115 Askin St, London, Ontario opened for worship September 7, 1873. At the time the church was in the Township of Westminster.  London was across the river and had a population of about 18,000.

It offers a combination of traditional and modern language services. It also provides a strong choir leader and organist and children’s program.

The Rector is Ven. Kenneth Anderson, the Erie Archdeacon.  Erie consists of the Delaware and Wellington Deaneries.
