Archdeaconry of Waterloo

St. John the Evangelist, Kitchener, OntarioThe archdeanery consists of 16 congregations in Kitchener (2006 pop. 204,668), Waterloo (pop 126,196), Cambridge (pop. 120,371) and area.

Archdeacon is the Ven. Peter Townshend rector of the Church of the Holy Saviour, Waterloo.   Regional Dean is Rev Rob Towler of St. Andrew’s Memorial, Kitchener.

Shown is the Memorial Scattering Garden established in 1999 at St John the Evangelist, Kitchener, which provides a beautiful environment for the remembrance of loved ones.   St John’s is the oldest Anglican parish in Kitchener-Waterloo, having been established in 1856.

Kitchener (2006 pop. 204,668) was known as Berlin until renamed during World War 1. It was the center of a large German-speaking settlement and even by 1911, 70% of the inhabitants were of German origin. Of the 4 Anglican churches only St John the Evangelist was established in the 19th century.

St. Columba’s, Waterloo, Ontario

St. Columba's, Waterloo, OntarioPriest in Charge of St. Columba’s, Waterloo is the Rev. Dana Rodgers.   The Sunday service begins at 9:30 am.

St Columba is one of three Anglican Churches in Waterloo with others being All Saints and the Church of the Holy Saviour.   There is also St Bede’s Chapel at Renison College at the University of Waterloo.   St Columba’s was a 2 point charge with St. Aidan’s, Elmira until St. Aidan’s closed in September 2007.

New Hamburg and Ayr, Ontario

New Hamburg is in Wilmot Township (2006 pop. 17,097) about 20km west of Kitchener/Waterloo.   Ayr is in the township of North Dumfries (2006 pop. 9,063) about 20km south of Kichener/Waterloo.   Both New Hamburg and Ayr are on the Nith River.

Christ Church, Ayr and St. George's, New HamburgSt. George’s, New Hamburg and Christ Church, Ayr, Ontario are a 2-point charge.   Jesse Dymond was ordained to the diaconate 4th of June, 2008 and appointed Deacon in Charge of the parish.

The exterior of Christ Church, Ayr has not changed since being built in 1917.   There was a major renovation in 2001 and 2002 that on the ground floor included a new kitchen, two new washrooms, Sunday School room/hall, nursery, a lift, a new stairway, two new exits and natural light from the glass blocked windows while the upper level included a room for the altar guild and an office for the priest.

St James Anglican, Cambridge, OntarioSt James Anglican Church, Hespeler began in 1882 as a mission of Trinity Anglican Church, Galt.   The Parish of St. James was organized in 1884 and on June 17, 1893 the cornerstone was laid for a church. Maurice Scollard Baldwin, 3rd Bishop of Huron, held dedication services on October 28, 1893.   St. James began as a 2-point charge with Preston and in 1890 it became a separate parish.   The original church building was closed in 1990 when the new church was erected at its present location.

Rector is the Rev. Canon George Ferris.   Sunday services are at 8:30 & 10:00 a.m.

The church began as a mission of St John’s, Kitchener with services at first in a parishioner’s home then in 1895 at the Presbyterian Church of Waterloo. The Parish Hall was given by Joseph E. Seagram in 1912 and the Church of the Holy Saviour was consecrated in 1919 with the Church Narthex and Tower added in 1934. Holy Saviour got it’s first organ in 1929 and since 1986 has a Casevant organ.

Trinity Anglican, Cambridge, Ontario

Trinity Anglican was consecrated in October 1844, 13 years before the Diocese of Huron was formed, by the first Bishop of Toronto, John Strachan. Trinity’s first rector was Rev. Michael Boomer who served there for 32 years.

The church’s average Sunday attendance is about 300 people and it has a large Sunday School and Nursery as well as a youth program. Among its community outreach projects is Trinity Community Table which serves hot lunches, without charge, 3 days per week.
